Subramanian Gopalsamy

Gopalsamy Subramanian lives in Bengaluru and works in collage: hand-torn pages from magazines, blended with acrylic, on canvas. He grew up in Thandavankulam, a coastal village in Tamil Nadu, where his father was a stage actor, and the make-up, costumes and painted screens of village theatre were his first exposure to art. He begins with a simple silhouette and fills it with found colour, so a foreign skyline becomes a girl's skirt and a shoal of fish becomes Radha and Krishna's ornaments. His subjects are figures from Indian mythology, Buddha, Krishna, Hanuman, and young girls.
